If You Want Reach, Don’t Start With Reach. Start by hard-wiring retention and monetization into the backbone of your product.
Because products that are used daily, grow in value, and get better with friends don't need to chase reach: they generate it. Below are three ways to engineer reach before you launch.
3 IDEAS FROM ME
I. Make Daily Use Inevitable (Recurrence = Your #1 Growth Engine)
Products rarely die from a lack of users. They die from a lack of reasons to return.
Daily use isn’t created by notifications, hacks, or dopamine tricks.
It comes from solving a naturally recurring problem that happens at least once per day.
Notion owns your morning standup. Streak owns your inbox workflow. Duolingo owns your commute.
Ask yourself:
- What recurring moment in my user's life can I own?
- How do I make that moment faster, simpler, and more rewarding?
- How can I compress time-to-value from minutes → seconds?
A product that becomes a daily ritual is already halfway to scale.
II. Build Compounding Value (The Power of Persistence)
The greatest missed opportunity in product design: most features don’t accumulate value.
If a user shows up 30 days in a row… what do they gain?
Your product should build persistent, compounding value through:
- Data
- Progress
- Assets
- Skills
- Recommendations
- Personalization
Retention skyrockets when every additional day makes the product better than the day before. The cost of leaving becomes unbearable.
III. Make Users Improve the Product (Network Effects by Design)
Too many companies treat network effects as something to “add later.”
Wrong order!
If you want reach, design user-to-user value transfer from day one.
Take Perplexity AI. They didn't build "just another search engine". They built a collective intelligence engine where every query improves answers for everyone. Your question trains the model. Your follow-ups refine the context. Your search patterns help the system understand nuance better.
The result? They went from zero to 100M queries per week in under two years because each user made the product smarter for the next million users. Growth was embedded in every search.
For your product, ask:
- How does one user make the product better for the next?
- What are the smallest meaningful social loops I can build?
- What value can users share content, progress, assets, taste, achievements?
The most scalable products grow because every new user increases the value for all users.
