🚀 3.2.1. Choosing the Right Wave ::: Atomic Scaling
Jun 04, 2026
Last week, I came back from a two-day retreat in Budapest with a founder I work with. Every quarter, we do this - escape the noise. No office. No Slack. No investor updates. No dashboards.
Just founders in an unusual place, looking backward, looking forward, and trying to make sense of the present.
We review what happened over the last 90 days. We challenge assumptions. We celebrate wins. We confront mistakes. We ask uncomfortable questions.
Most weeks of the quarter are spent grinding. Reviewing scorecards. Tracking KPIs. Making decisions. Fighting fires. Executing playbooks. Trying to turn predictions into reality.
But these quarterly sessions serve a different purpose. hey are fuel.
A reminder of why we’re fighting in the first place. The excitement of making progress. The fear of the consequences of walking down the wrong path. The opportunity to adjust course before the data confirms we’ve already drifted too far.
As I reflected on those conversations, I wanted to share some of these ideas and two concepts I use constantly in Atomic Scaling: Prediction and Prophecy.
3 IDEAS:
I. PvP: Prediction vs Prophecy
Let’s clarify. Think of an entrepreneur's mind as windshield wipers, sweeping between left brain and right brain, data and story, back and forth.
Prediction lives in the left brain. It’s about testing hypotheses, tracking key metrics, and making calls backed by hard data. It’s analytical, logical, measurable - cause and effect.
Prophecy lives in the right brain. It’s about sensing where the world is heading and telling the story in a way that inspires belief, mobilization, and alignment. It’s less about measurement, more about vision. Sometimes, yes - it’s preaching.
Both are essential.
II. Why Prophecies matter
Stoic philosopher Epictetus reminded us: focus on what’s within your control and let go of what’s not. Day to day, I don’t stress over prophecies, they’re beyond my control.
But here’s the paradox:
But here's the twist: prophecy isn't fighting fate. It's the one prediction you're allowed to make about yourself. Because it shapes the most important decision you make as an entrepreneur - where you spend your time.
Like a surfer, you can’t fight the current. You ride it. Your prophecy helps you choose your playground: the right wave at the right time. Once you've chosen that arena, your predictions help you win inside it with the tools you can control - scorecards, reviews, and systems.
The rule is simple:
• Use prophecy to choose the game.
• Use prediction to win it.
III. From Observer to Participant: Builder Mode On
The next decade could look doomed: accelerating AI, climate pressure, political instability, three storms colliding.
I choose to see what comes after the storm: the clearing. As a techno-optimist, I believe human ingenuity will find solutions. We’ll enter a new era of abundance.
In shifts this big, we need both spectators and builders. No moral hierarchy, just more hands on deck.
The next chapter isn’t fate, it’s ours to build. Play like a founder. Think like a citizen. Build arches, not islands or bunkers. Help people cross the chasm, and enjoy the ride.
2 QUOTES:
I. “Emotion is Energy in Motion. Emotions are the fuel and the mind is the pilot, which together propel the ship toward actions." — Ludovic Bodin, Author of Atomic Scaling
II. “We care more than anything else about storytelling skills and analytical skills of the founders.” — Fabrice Grinda, Investor
1 ACTION FOR YOU:
Before the next quarter begins, identify one behavior change - for yourself or your organization - that would most increase your chances of success. Tiny behavior changes, repeated consistently for 90 days, often create bigger results than new strategies.
Whatever story you’re running, remember: life’s short. Optimize for impact, but don’t forget to have fun shipping.
Meanwhile — share this issue, along with my book (free), with an entrepreneur friend or a VC/PE colleague who'd get something out of it: https://book.atomicscaling.com/

P.S. If this resonates, let’s continue the conversation.
I work with founders, executive teams, boards, and VC/PE Value Creation teams to turn long-term ambition into focused quarterly execution. Through structured strategy reviews, operating rhythms, and AI-enabled transformation initiatives, we help entrepreneurs identify their highest-leverage priorities and accelerate value creation.
The goal is simple: better decisions, stronger execution, and greater outcome.
